- Book 1 of 2: Leading Through the Storm
Every crisis sends a signal before it strikes. Most leaders recognize it only in hindsight.
You've seen it before. The concern raised in a meeting and politely set aside. The inspection finding that waited. The system everyone trusted because it had always worked. Then came the day it didn't.
By the time a crisis demands your attention, the opportunity to shape its outcome has often already passed.
Leading Before the Storm was written for that critical window, the period before disruption becomes obvious, when leaders can still influence what happens next.
Drawing on documented events from around the world, including disasters, infrastructure failures, cyberattacks, transportation incidents, public-sector breakdowns, legal decisions, organizational failures, and near misses, Dr. Karissa Thomas reveals the recurring patterns that exist before crisis becomes visible. These are not hypothetical scenarios. They are real events that expose one undeniable truth: crises rarely arrive without warning. People simply fail to recognize the signals for what they are.
Grounded in The Mosaic Way™, Dr. Thomas's leadership philosophy, this book combines emotional intelligence, organizational leadership, crisis preparedness, and practical decision-making into a leadership approach designed for today's complex world. Through documented case studies, practical reflection, and the Mosaic Shift Matrix™, readers learn to recognize patterns earlier, strengthen organizational readiness, and make better decisions before uncertainty becomes consequence.
In This Book, You'll Learn How To:
- Recognize the early warning signals that precede organizational failure and act before options disappear.
- Build structural readiness into teams, systems, and decision-making before pressure exposes hidden weaknesses.
- Lead with clarity, emotional discipline, and sound judgment during uncertainty and high-stakes situations.
- Close the gap between the standards your organization promotes and the conditions it actually maintains.
- Strengthen communication, coordination, and decision-making across departments, agencies, and stakeholders.
- Build a culture where concerns are raised early instead of becoming tomorrow's crisis.
- Improve organizational resilience, business continuity, and operational readiness.
- Prepare your household and family with the same principles used by resilient organizations.
Who Should Read This Book?
Whether you lead a corporation, government agency, hospital, school, university, nonprofit organization, emergency management team, or your own household, your greatest opportunity to influence the future exists before the crisis begins.
This book is written for:
- Executives and business leaders
- Emergency management professionals
- Risk, safety, and compliance leaders
- Government and public-sector officials
- Healthcare administrators
- School, district, college, and university leaders
- Operations and human resources professionals
- Military, law enforcement, and first responders
- Nonprofit and community leaders
- Students and instructors in leadership, emergency management, and public administration
- Anyone committed to protecting people, strengthening organizations, and preparing for uncertainty
We live in an age where disruption spreads faster than institutions adapt. The leaders who make the greatest difference recognize what others overlook, prepare while others postpone, and act while there is still time to change the outcome.
This is more than a book about crisis leadership.
It is about becoming the kind of leader who sees what others miss, strengthens what others ignore, and changes outcomes before the storm arrives.
The storm is coming.
Will you recognize the signal in time?
