The Leader’s Guide to Feedback: Why You Need It, How To Get It, and What To Do With It
Most leaders believe they have a reasonably accurate picture of how they show up at work. Research suggests otherwise. In approximately 80 to 85 percent of structured feedback processes, there is a meaningful gap between how leaders see themselves and how the people around them experience their leadership in one way or another. That gap shapes decisions, erodes trust, and limits effectiveness — often without the leader ever realizing it.
The problem is not a lack of capability or good intention. It is a lack of information. And the information leaders need most — an honest, multi-perspective account of how their leadership is actually being experienced — is precisely what most of them have never had reliable access to.
The Leader's Guide to Feedback is a practical, evidence-based guide to changing that. Drawing on more than two decades of working with leaders across industries and career stages, Drew Bird makes the case that feedback is not a soft skill or a developmental add-on. It is the mechanism that makes all other leadership development possible — and getting it right is one of the most important investments any leader can make.
The book covers the full feedback journey: why feedback so rarely arrives on its own, what makes a feedback process genuinely honest and useful, how to collect it through methods ranging from a single question to a full 360-degree assessment, and how to work through what you receive in a way that produces real, lasting change. At its heart is the PROSPER framework — a seven-stage structured process for moving from receiving feedback to doing something meaningful with it.
Whether you are preparing for your first formal feedback process or looking to get more from the ones you have already run, this book gives you the understanding, the tools, and the confidence to use feedback as it was always meant to be used: not as an event to be managed, but as a practice to be cultivated.
