Every day, leaders are expected to improve instruction, build a positive school culture, support staff, respond to crises, and manage an endless stream of competing priorities. It's easy to spend each day reacting rather than leading.
Leader or Plate Spinner? introduces the 2 + 2 Leadership Framework, a practical model developed through decades of experience by three National Distinguished Principals. Built around two essential responsibilities—leading the learning and building a positive culture—the framework provides a clear, actionable approach for helping leaders focus on what matters most.
Grounded in research and refined through real-world practice, this book bridges the gap between leadership theory and daily implementation. Through personal stories, coaching insights, practical strategies, reflection prompts, and ready-to-use tools, readers will learn how to make more intentional decisions, strengthen instructional leadership, foster positive school communities, and sustain their effectiveness over time.
The framework is anchored by four simple reflection questions:
● Did I lead the learning?
● Did I build a positive culture?
● Did I make a difference today?
● Did I have fun?
Whether you're an aspiring administrator, new principal, experienced school leader, or district administrator, Leader or Plate Spinner? offers a practical playbook for moving beyond reactive leadership and creating meaningful, lasting impact in your school community.
