Leather spine with printed paper over card (hardcover), binding is scuffed, soiled, and stained; oblong 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Advert end papers, front free end paper creased with a 2" tear; lacks most of the back free end paper. 336 generally clean pages, end papers are foxed. The first 20 pages are instructions. The music is in four parts with round notes.Horatio Richmond Palmer (1834-1907), b. Sherburne, New York; studied music in Europe before returning to the United States to teach music. He was in Chicago from 1861 to 1874, when he became the choir director and organist of the Broome Street Tabernacle in New York City. He founded the Church Choral Union in 1881, and was an active writer and publisher of sacred music. He is the author of the hymn "Yield Not to Temptation" and the author of more than fifty hymn collections and music theory textbooks. In 1886 he became dean of the Summer School of Music at Chautauqua, N.Y.Luther Orlando Emerson (1820-1915), b. Parsonsfield, Maine; d. Cambridge, Massachusetts. Emerson studied under Isaac B. Woodbury, and afterwards began to teach singing, direct choirs, and to compose his own music. After small success in publisihing, in 1857 he entered into an arrangement with the Oliver Ditson Company, of Boston, who promoted his music books with great success. …
