A heartfelt slice of life in small-town Ireland, brimming with passions and all-too-human foibles, from the author of the well-loved Wexford Trilogy.
Set in rural Ireland of the early 1960s, Lay Me Down Softly introduces the colourful if seedy burlesque that is Delaney's Travelling Roadshow - and in particular its boxing hall, where prizefighter Dean takes on all comers on a nightly basis. That is, until a challenge from a professional fighter upsets the apple-cart…
About the Author: Billy Roche was born and still lives in Wexford in southern Ireland, where almost all his plays are set and which gave its name to his first work, The Wexford Trilogy, which was filmed for television after its success on stage. Other work includes the stage plays, Amphibians for the RSC, The Cavalcaders seen at the Royal Court as well as the Abbey, On Such As We also for the Abbey, the novel Tumbling Down and the screenplay for Trojan Eddie starring Stephen Rea.
