Item description from seller

(London: Gilvert & Rivington Ltd nd [1902]. Second Edition Illustrated. No dustwrapper FROM THE LIBRARY OF ELIZABETH DAVID WITH 4 PAGES OF HER HAND-WRITTEN MANUSCRIPT NOTES LAID IN. With Elizabeth David's oval book-plate on the Preface page. Bound in oatmeal cloth with red label lettered in gilt to the spine. 1171 pp + 4 pages of adverts at the end of the book. Elizabeth David points out in her notes that the binders have misbound 4 pages of adverts (pages 1177-1184) at the front of the book rather than the rear. Furthermore she points out that pages 310-313 are missing from this copy. The majority of her other manuscript comments are in her customary green ink and relate to individual references in the book including: Baysalt (page 81), Patent breads (page 140), Compressed vegetables (page 289), Crystallised and Glace Fruits - use of spent syrup (page 309), Danish bacon (page 318), French butter - a perfect, eye-witness description of the making of farm butter in Normandy (page 387), Frozen Milk (page 396), Furmenting (page 400), Pottle (page 437), Myrabolanes (page 621), Prunelloes (page 761), Saltpetre (page 820), Sugar Candy (page 902), Sugar Plums (page 904), Tomato Paste - a new condiment (page 955), Turkish Delight (page 976), Tutti-Frutti Ice cream (page 981), Worcestershire Sauce (page 1031), Yeast (page 1033), Italian warehousemen (page 1045).
