This is perhaps the most important of the many works and fragments left among Bentham's papers unpublished when the first collected edition of his Works was completed in 1843. Just over a century later it first came to public notice, edited by Professor C.W. Everett as 'The Limits of Jurisprudence Defined'. Professor Hart's definitive edition, under Bentham's own title for the book, is based on a systematic re-examination of the manuscripts which has led to very substantial changes to the text published in 1945. These changes are explained in the editorial introduction, which also incorporates a detailed explanation of the evolution of the work. Beginning as a continuation of the unfinished seventeenth chapter of 'An Introduction to the Principals of Morals and Legislation', 'Of Laws in General' became not only a work in its own right but a work surpassing in depth and penetration the matrix from which it emerged.
