Bien que son œuvre ait été le plus souvent « réduite » au Pop art italien – voire totalement ignorée –, Laura Grisi a dès le départ débordé la catégorie, évoluant entre diverses lignes de recherche artistique internationale (art conceptuel, art optique et art cinétique programmé, art minimal) et les intégrant dans sa propre synthèse originale. Dans le cadre d'une activité dont le motif fondamental est le « voyage » – des lieux éloignés visités et documentés à la multiplicité des médiums utilisés – Grisi incarne un sujet féminin apatride et nomade qui défie les politiques d'identité, l'univocité de la représentation et l'unidirectionnalité du temps.
Née à Rhodes, en Grèce, en 1939, éduquée à Paris et vivant entre New York et Rome où elle est décédée en 2017, Grisi a passé de longues périodes de sa vie en Afrique, en Amérique du Sud et en Polynésie. Cette implication avec des cultures au-delà de celles du monde occidental devait profondément marquer ses propres expériences dans la recherche d'une pensée cosmique ou d'une « science du concret » (Levi-Strauss). Bien qu'elle ait fait de la photographie la méthode originale de ses recherches au début des années 1960, elle passe ensuite aux « peintures variables » au milieu des années 1960 (avec des panneaux coulissants et des tubes au néon). À la fin des années 1960, elle crée des installations environnementales dynamiques dans lesquelles elle reproduit artificiellement des phénomènes naturels tels que le brouillard, le vent et la pluie, avant de parvenir, dans les années 1970 et 1980, à une forme verbale descriptive et à un langage mathématique comme outil conceptuel, afin d'explorer les mécanismes de la perception et de la connaissance humaines. L'ensemble de l'œuvre de Grisi s'efforce de prendre en compte l'ampleur, la multiplicité, l'imperceptibilité et la prolifération infinie de tous les possibles, mais part de contraintes précises, de lacunes paradoxales, de limites linguistiques et sémiotiques, selon une approche proche du Nouveau Roman, du cinéma de la Nouvelle Vague et du groupe de l'Oulipo.
