About this title

Synopsis

A Late Printed Sermon Against False Prophets, Vindicated by Letter, From the Causeless Aspersions of Mr. Francis Cheynell is a significant theological work by Jasper Mayne, originally published in 1647. This volume captures a heated religious dispute of the era, offering insights into the complex theological landscape of 17th-century England. Mayne's work serves as both a defense of his sermon and a broader commentary on the identification and condemnation of ‘false prophets' within the religious community.

The book provides valuable historical context, shedding light on the intense debates and personal attacks prevalent during this period. Students and scholars of religious history, particularly those focusing on the English Reformation and its aftermath, will find this work a vital resource. Mayne's engagement with Cheynell's criticisms highlights the contentious nature of theological discourse and the challenges of maintaining doctrinal purity in a time of significant religious upheaval.
