Sam Keery's novel is a warm and intricate tapestry of an era and a sensitive account of a boy's formative years. The author is perceptive and unsentimental about the political forces that control Joe s community but this is essentially a human, personal story - of the delicacy of first loves, of a boy's secret fears and shames, of the vivid territory of his imagination.
