Paperback. Some secrets are meant to be deleted. This one was meant to be found.Nora Reyes is the last person to read a life before it goes into the dark. She's a digital estate curator: when someone dies, families hire her to go through the phone, the inbox, the cloud - to keep what should be kept, and quietly erase what no grieving family should ever find. The second phone. The unsent letters. The version of a person that would break the people left behind. Nora is discreet, unshockable, and very good at deciding which version of the dead survives. Then a woman she has never met drives into a reservoir on a rainy night - and does something no client ever has. Cassandra Hale names Nora from beyond the grave. The deeper Nora reads into Cass's hidden life - a second identity, a storage unit under a maiden name, love letters to a woman who doesn't exist yet - the clearer it becomes: Cass wasn't planning to die. She was planning to disappear. And her grieving husband would like the whole matter closed, gently, as though nothing ever happened. But Cass left a message. For the one person alive who understands what it costs to be tidied away into something bearable - and who might, this time, refuse.Don't let them edit me.A haunting, deeply human novel about grief, memory, and the lives we leave behind in the machines - for readers of Liane Moriarty, Ann Napolitano, and The Collected Regrets of Clover. Some secrets are meant to be deleted. This one was meant to be found.
Nora Reyes is the last person to read a life before it goes into the dark. She's a digital estate curator: when someone dies, families hire her to go through the phone, the inbox, the cloud — to keep what should be kept, and quietly erase what no grieving family should ever find. The second phone. The unsent letters. The version of a person that would break the people left behind. Nora is discreet, unshockable, and very good at deciding which version of the dead survives.
Then a woman she has never met drives into a reservoir on a rainy night — and does something no client ever has. Cassandra Hale names Nora from beyond the grave.
The deeper Nora reads into Cass's hidden life — a second identity, a storage unit under a maiden name, love letters to a woman who doesn't exist yet — the clearer it becomes: Cass wasn't planning to die. She was planning to disappear. And her grieving husband would like the whole matter closed, gently, as though nothing ever happened.
But Cass left a message. For the one person alive who understands what it costs to be tidied away into something bearable — and who might, this time, refuse.
