This book introduces the emerging areas of laser-based manufacturing such as additive manufacturing (AM) of metal matrix composites (MMCs), joining of hard-to-weld superalloys, damage-free machining of fiber-reinforced composites, surface properties enhancement using cladding techniques, and modeling and simulation of laser beam manufacturing techniques. Laser Applications in Manufacturing provides a quick guide for researchers and academicians to recent advancements in the development of powder-based MMCs manufactured using AM technology.
This book:
Laser Applications in Manufacturing is recommended for researchers working on fabrication of numerous new and novel materials. The book serves as a resource for scientists and engineers working in laser-based manufacturing techniques who want to learn about the most up-to-date research.
Dr Pankaj Kumar is Director of Center for Materials and Manufacturing Department of Mechanical Engineering, SR University, Warangal. In 2011, he received a Teaching Assistant Fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of India. He received his Ph.D. from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Dr. Pankaj has more than 10 years of experience in design, fabrication, and characterization of micro to nano scale components using unconventional techniques. His current research includes additive manufacturing, micromachining, composite materials processing technology, nano-materials, and sustainable manufacturing.
Dr Manowar Hussain is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering, BIT Sindri, Dhanbad (A Govt. Engineering Institute) with five years of teaching experience. He has completed his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. His area of Specialization is Laser material processing and Non-Conventional Processes. He has more than 30 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals with 494 citations to his credit and 2 patents published in the Indian Patent Office. He is a Life Member of professional bodies like the Indian Society for Technical Education and the Indian Laser Association.
Dr Amit Kumar Jain is a Lecturer within the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment at the Glasgow Caledonian University, UK. Before this, he primarily worked at the University of Cambridge, UK, for his postdoctoral research in predictive maintenance. He received a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Indore, India, for his contributions to prognostics in intelligent manufacturing systems. He holds a master's degree in maintenance engineering from NIT Bhopal and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He is presently researching on data-centric and risk-informed asset management. He focuses on how asset information and artificial intelligence can considerably improve asset performance. His primary research interests are reliability engineering, industry 4.0 for SMEs, manufacturing analytics, and operations management.
Amit has over 20 papers published in reputed academic journals and conferences. Many of these papers appeared in leading engineering and management journals such as Reliability Engineering and Systems Safety, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, and the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. In 2011, he received a Teaching Assistant Fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of India; in 2018, he received a Visiting Researcher Grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering London; and in 2019, he won the Best Paper Award at the Int. Conf. on Precision, Meso, Micro, and Nano Engineering. Through research and consulting projects, he actively engages with the industry viz. British Telecommunications, UK. He is the Guest Associate Editor of the Life Cycle Engineering speciality section of Frontiers in Manufacturing Technology. He is also associated with CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group as a Series Editor. He is a member of the international advisory board of conferences and has chaired various sessions. He has also given over a dozen invited talks at universities and faculty development programmes of national and international stature, including the University of Johannesburg, NIT Bhopal, etc. He is a member of the Prognostics and Health Management Society, USA.
He also serves as the Assistant Dean - Research for Alliance School of Business.
Sunil Pathak was awarded his PhD (2016) in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Indore (MP) India. He is currently a researcher under MSCA-IV International Mobility at HiLASE Centre, Institute of Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic. He has conducted extensive research on the advanced finishing of gears. Presently he has been working on laser shock peening of intricately shaped geometries, nanomaterials synthesis by electrical discharge machining (EDM) and improving the cylindrical gear tooth profile by electrochemical machining (ECM).
