Selecting topics which are representative of such a broad field is difficult. Laser Ablation and its Applications emphasizes the wide range of these topics rather than - as is so often the case in advanced science – focusing on one specialty or discipline. The book is divided into four sections: theory and modeling, ultrafast interactions, material processing and laser-matter interaction in novel regimes. The latter range from MALDI to ICF, SNOM’s and femtosecond nanosurgery to laser space propulsion.

The book arose from the SPIE series of High Power Laser Ablation Symposia which began in 1998. It is intended for a graduate course in laser interactions with plasmas and materials, but it should be accessible to anyone with a graduate degree in physics or engineering. It is also intended as a major reference work to familiarize scientists just entering the field with laser ablation and its applications.

The only exceptions are when the customer has not provided a valid phone number and there are import duties which UPS needs to collect before making final delivery. In those cases, the package will be held at a nearby UPS Access Point until the customer either picks up the package in person or makes arrangements over the phone with UPS to release the package for final delivery. Our shipping charge only covers international postage. Import duties vary widely by country and are additional. We thoroughly clean all books that we offer for sale and do all basic book-repairs ourselves. Basic repairs include repairing slanted bindings, applying additional glue to hinges that have become excessively loose, hinge-tape repairs for damaged hinges, minor binding split repairs, gluing small tears in exterior of covers, removal (as much as possible) of black marker marks to covers of ex-library books, removal of smaller non-permanent stickers, straightening of minor bowing to covers or spine, and applying jacket protectors to books with torn or fragile jackets or for especially pristine or collectible books. We do not do major binding repairs, and any un-repairable binding splits or general weakness in binding will be noted. Any significant repairs such as a hinge-tape repair will also be noted. These repairs do not usually change the underlying condition grade, but do make the book more presentable. Some books are beyond help and will be listed as "Fair/Acceptable" or "Poor". Our books are graded conservatively with library books never graded above "Good" and used books rarely graded above "Very Good". If you are a consumer you can cancel the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory Right to cancel

You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Salish Sea Books, 4700 Fieldston Road, 98225, Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A., +1 360-733-1793, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Salish Sea Books, 4700 Fieldston Road, 98225, Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A., +1 360-733-1793, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of cancellation

The right of cancellation does not apply to:
