This retrospective of Californian photographer Larry Sultan (1946–2009) was published to accompany the first solo museum exhibition of his work in Germany. Within the context of American art, Sultan's work stands as one of the defining pillars of post-conceptual photography. After making a significant contribution to the history of contemporary photography with Mike Mandel through the groundbreaking 1977 series *Evidence*, Sultan attracted renewed attention at the beginning of the twenty-first century with *The Valley*, a photographic series offering a behind-the-scenes look at the adult film industry. Through these and other influential bodies of work, Sultan continually challenged the boundaries between documentary, fiction, and personal narrative, securing his place as one of the most important voices in contemporary photography.
