Two sheets, bound at the left margin with a red ribbon, covered by a wax seal. (1) 16 in. x 9 ¾ in. This document certifies that a certain parcel of land near Fort Des Moines Iowa which had been deposited to the favor of Amos P. Granger for his service in the militia during the war of 1812 had been assigned to Harriet Gilman. Some of the wording is printed (boiler-plate) and some of it is handwritten. The signature of President James Buchanan by a secretary (probably J. A. B. Leonard) appears. Recording information and dates also appear. (2) 7 ½ in. x 9 ¾ in. Headed "General Land Office." Dated September 19, 1867, this document certifies that the annexed document (described above) "is a true and literal exemplification from the Patents records of this Office." The documents have been folded to 4 in. x 9 ¾ in. The documents show chips and tears along the folds. Age-related tanning. (3) Accompanying the above is a well-worn, torn 4 ½ in. x 6 ½ in. sheet with appears to be information regarding the recording of a document in 1868 in a land office in Worth, Iowa. It shows recording fees of ninety cents and fifteen cents; a portion along the right side is present but detached. This may or may not be a related to the documents in (1) and (2) above.
