Ida Pfeiffer, born in Vienna Austria, became an inveterate traveler, visiting distant and various parts of the world. She arrived in California in 1853 and this book gives her experiences and views of California of that time. The first printing of the author's California visit was published in 1856 as part of her "Second Journey Round the World." Her descriptions of San Francisco, American habits in respect to gold, money, trade, and entertainment - - and an excellent offering of observations about California's native people - - make this book one of the best accounts to be found on California of that era. 75 pages.".
