When two pigs find some delicious-smelling truffles they decide to sell them in the market to buy themselves a better life. But on the way to market the truffles start to disappear. Told in a lilting rhythm this tale is accompanied by rich woodcut illustrations.

After writing more than 70 books for children, William Mayne knows what his audience likes. And in Lady Muck he has another winner. Sowk and Board--like most pigs--are greedy. But unlike most pigs, they also have upwardly mobile aspirations, so when they discover valuable truffles with a delicious smell they see their chance to become "gentlepiggies".

The real appeal of this book lies in the unique piggy style of the story itself:

Then came the crossroads, and "My how hoppity they trufflies be," said Sowk. "Stop playing gamies, you'll get bruises and they won't a-like you none down in the market." "Carry careful," said Boark. Sowk took a look for bruises. "Just in casey," she said to herself, "tasty this truffly just as hasty and no wasty." And down it went.

Asking to be read aloud at bedtime, and complimented by delightful illustrations by Jonathan Heale, this book will thrill time and again. (Ages 6 to 9) --Lucie Naylor
