Item description from seller

Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.(Old Periodicals, 19th Century Newspapers, Americana, Harper's Weekly, Reconstruction, Illustrated Newspapers, Church Fire, Dancing Lunatics, Labor Questions). Issued December 2nd, 1865, New York, by Harper & Brothers. An actual piece of American history issued during the Reconstruction. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images issued contemporary to the events. Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue. During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued. Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W. Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat.[B8864]. The full front page is a print of the: "Burning of Rev. Dr. Tyng's Church, Corner of 16th Street and Rutherford Place, New York". Prints within include: "Funeral of Lord Palmerston - The Procession to the Grave in the Interior of Westminster Abbey" "Rev. George W. Gordon, Ringleader in the Jamaica Riots" "The Late Hon. Preston King" "Dredging the Hudson River for the Body of Preston King" "Grand Parade of the Metropolitan Police in New York City". There is also an interesting full page print which is essentially a political cartoon headed: "Solution of the Labor Question in the South" which shows "ex-slaves" and the "ex-dominant race". Other prints include: "Grand Parade of the Metropolitan Police in New York City" "Dancing by Lunatics--Ball Given to the Patients of the Insane Asylum on Blackwell's Island, New York" and prints of: "Francis Solano Lopez, President of Paraguay" "Gen. Bartolome Mitre, President of the Argentine Republic" "H. E. Domingo F. Sarmiento, Minister of the Argentine Republic and "Chevalier J. M. D'Azambuja, the New Minister from Brazil". The back page cartoon is captioned: "Magnetic".…
