Stop memorizing lab values as disconnected numbers. Start understanding what they are actually telling you.
A laboratory report can contain dozens of values—but knowing the reference range is only the beginning. The real skill is understanding what the test measures, why a value may be high or low, how related results fit together, and what the overall pattern may mean in clinical context.
Lab Values Made Clear was created to make that process easier.
Written for nursing, medical, pharmacy, and allied health students—as well as healthcare professionals who want a practical refresher—this guide breaks laboratory interpretation into clear, manageable concepts without burying the reader in unnecessary complexity.
Inside, you'll explore essential laboratory testing across major clinical areas, including:
CBC & Hematology — Understand RBCs, WBCs, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, indices, anemia patterns, and more.
Electrolytes & Fluid Balance — Make sense of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and related abnormalities.
Kidney & Liver Function — Connect creatinine, BUN, eGFR, AST, ALT, ALP, bilirubin, proteins, and other markers to organ function.
Glucose & Diabetes Testing — Understand glucose, A1C, and other important metabolic findings.
Cardiac Markers & Lipids — Learn the clinical significance of troponins, BNP, cholesterol studies, and related tests.
Thyroid & Endocrine Tests — Develop a clearer approach to TSH, thyroid hormones, cortisol, and other endocrine markers.
Coagulation, ABGs & Acid–Base Balance — Work through PT/INR, aPTT, blood gases, oxygenation, and common acid–base patterns.
You'll also cover urinalysis, infection and inflammatory markers, pancreatic and gastrointestinal tests, vitamins, minerals, nutritional studies, and frequently misinterpreted high-yield laboratory findings.
But this isn't simply a collection of normal ranges.
Throughout the book, you'll learn to:
Understand what each test actually measures.
Interpret high and low results in context.
Recognize patterns across related laboratory values.
Connect the numbers to physiology and patient presentation.
Apply your knowledge through practical clinical examples and review material.
Whether you're preparing for clinical rotations, strengthening your laboratory interpretation skills, reviewing for an exam, or trying to become more confident when looking at patient results, Lab Values Made Clear gives you a structured way to turn numbers into understanding.
Don't just memorize the values. Learn to read the story behind them.
