About this Item
First printing of the first Select Family Edition. Illustrated with seven tissue-guarded steel-engravings by T. G. Flowers and T. S. Brown, as called for, including frontispiece showing a scene from The Giaour p. 8 by T. S. Brown printed by W. Banks, Edinburgh and title-piece showing a scene from Lara p. 98 by T. G. Flowers, printed by W. Banks, Edinburgh. ***A very good copy in the original green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine and blind decorative rules and small blind decorative motifs to the spine, front and back boards. The boards are clean, with only light handling marks. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Corners slightly creased. Head and tail of spine rubbed, but with no tears to the fragile cloth. The binding is secure, with no reading lean. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a faded ink inscription on the front free endpaper. Tissue-guard to frontispiece slightly creased and crumpled. A few lower page corners slightly creased. Pages clean without any foxing. Importantly, there is no splitting to the fragile binding, even to the endpapers which are secure. ***174mm x 118mm. 702 pages plus a sixteen-page publisher's catalogue of 'cheap books published by Milner & Sowerby' at the back of the book. ***'George Gordon, Lord Byron, had not only his own talents, but the pride of illustrious ancestry to boast; for even so early as the conquest, his family was distinguished, not merely for their extensive manors in Lancashire and other parts, but for their prowess in arms. ***--- His Lordship spent a considerable portion of his early life in Scotland, where the wild and mountainous scenes which surrounded him, contribute not a little to strengthen the mighty energies of his mind, and to imprint on his vivid imagination those powerful and beautiful images of natural grandeur and wildness which characterise all his writings.' (Quote from Life of the Author to the fore of the book).***A lovely Victorian pocket edition of Lord Byron's works in its original cloth binding, illustrated with seven steel engravings. Would make a nice gift for a poetry lover. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 2956x
