Your new smile is only the beginning. Learn how to live comfortably and confidently with it.
Your dentures are in, but everyday life suddenly feels unfamiliar. What can you eat? Why do certain words sound different? Is that sore spot part of adjusting, or should you call your dentist? And will sharing a meal ever feel natural again?
Living With Dentures by Adrian C. Merrick helps you navigate these questions with clear explanations, practical steps, and realistic encouragement.
Across 18 chapters, this evidence-based guide takes you from preparing for dentures through the first days, first month, and everyday care that follows. Whether you wear complete, partial, immediate, or implant-retained dentures, you will find guidance to help you understand your appliance and work more confidently with your dental team.
Inside, you will discover how to:
-
Navigate the early weeks: Understand healing, unfamiliar sensations, and the difference between adapting and tolerating a problem that needs attention.
-
Approach meals with greater confidence: Explore food textures, chewing techniques, and practical ways to progress at your own pace.
-
Practice clearer speech: Use simple exercises to work through awkward sounds and everyday conversations.
-
Build a reliable care routine: Understand cleaning, storage, mouth care, and appropriate adhesive use.
-
Respond to common difficulties: Learn about soreness, slipping, clicking, gagging, dry mouth, and bad breath, including when to contact your dentist.
-
Prepare for long-term success: Understand adjustments, relines, repairs, replacement, and continuing oral health checks.
-
Feel more comfortable around others: Address the worries that can accompany dining out, relationships, and social situations.
Illustrations, a troubleshooting guide, first-month and daily-care checklists, appointment preparation sheets, and caregiver tools make the information easy to return to when you need it.
Written in plain English for denture wearers and the people supporting them, this book complements your dentist’s instructions with practical guidance for life between appointments.
Take the uncertainty out of your next meal, conversation, and care routine. Make Living With Dentures your everyday companion as you learn to feel at home with your new smile.
