8vo. 9 x 6 inches. 16 pp. In limp cream card wrapper with black titles. Handmade paper with deckled fore edge. Some spotting and staining of wrapper, but otherwise a very good copy with a clean interior. Contemporary ink signature at top of front wrapper. Second impression of the last of the Four Quartets, in the original wartime format. The poem has a theme of purgation by fire and reflects the experience of the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire was the location of a small High Church Anglican community founded in 1626, dispersed in the Civil War and re-formed in 1657. A scarce variant on handmade paper.
