2 volumes quarto 10 3/4 x 8 inches. the 'Imitation' bound in full blind embossed dark morocco in an ornate floral design in relief- with a metal clasp, ornate gilt turn ins and red silk endpapers. The 'Appendice' in a simple dark morocco with gilt turn ins and marbled endpapers, AD embossed on the upper board. BOTH VOLUMES WITH FINE PAINTED EDGES WITH GILT CRUCIFORM PATTERNS. The Imitation is in BRIGHT COLOURED chromolithography throughout- in the most splendid colours that are a true monument to the art of colour printing. The Appendice is basically a bibliography illustrated with 4 photographic plates and numerous wood engraved borders. Collation. IMITATION 1856- Half title, dedication, plus a hand finished gift dedication dated 1859 'A Mon Cher Mari', dedication to 'Aux Amis Des Arts' from Curmer, frontispiece, title, i-xii pages containing the calendar, 1-399 containing the main body of the text and a fine colophon page stating the work was started in 1855 and finished in 1857, (i), xiv Table of Maitres. APPENDICE 1858- Half title, title, i-viii, 1-143, catalogue 1-52, Indexes (xvi) containing the illustrations to Holbein's Dance of Death and Le Grande Danse Macabre 1-16 pp of text. Lithography for the Imitation by Lemercier and typography by J. Claye. Collations to The Imitation seem to vary slightly so sold as described. A lovely copy with an unusual gift page.
