Scarce biography of John William Fletcher (September 12, 1729 August 14, 1785) , who was born at Nyon in Switzerland. Fletcher was a contemporary of John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) , a key interpreter of Wesleyan theology in the 18th century, and one of Methodism's first great theologians. Of French Huguenot stock, his given name was actually Jean Guillaume de la Flechere. Fletcher was renowned in the Britain of his day for his piety and generosity; when asked if he had any needs, he responded, ".I want nothing but more grace." This volume is the 2nd American from the second (enlarged) London edition. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of de la Flechere. The volume shows external age/wear. Front board and preliminary pages, frontispiece and title page are detached. Spine cover shows loss of material. Age-toned pages show occasional foxing and marginal water markings. Rear blank page is detached. The book measures approximately 5 1.2" x 8 3/4" and contains 399 pages plus a page of publisher's advertisements. WorldCat returns but 4 copies of this edition as well as several earlier dating back to 1805.…
