From the library of Jules Renard, with his bookplate by Toulouse-Lautrec. The bookplate, a visual pun of Renard's name, features a blue fox, resembling the fox from Histoires naturelles (1899), Renard's beautiful bestiary illustrated by Toulouse-Lautrec. Signed and inscribed by both translators - Louis Fabulet and Robert d'Humières - to Jules Renard (1864–1910), influential literary figure of the Belle Époque, writer, and co-founder of the Mercure de France. With some markings to the text in blue pencil by Renard. Robert d'Humières (1868–1915), described by Proust as "the marvellous translator of Kipling", played a significant role in Proust's life. He assisted Proust with his translations of Ruskin, receiving a warm acknowledgement in the preface to La Bible d'Amiens (1904). d'Humières was also a model for the character of Saint-Loup in À la recherche du temps perdu.
