" Confondue par le probl�me des dates de l'enfance, seule dans un paysage vide o� tout semble tant�t tr�s proche et tant�t lointain ", Marguerite Yourcenar, qui parle peu d'elle-m�me, laisse seulement deviner, derri�re le portrait du p�re, sa silhouette de petite fille, puis d'adolescente. Et, derri�re le fourmillement des passions, le chaos des impressions, derri�re les d�sastres priv�s et historiques, ce qui constituera son monde, comme si elle nous tendait quelques cl�s de son oeuvre romanesque.

N�e le 8 juin 1903 � Bruxelles d'un p�re fran�ais et d'une m�re belge qui meurt quelques jours plus tard, Marguerite de Crayencour passe son enfance entre le ch�teau familial du Mont-Noir, la Belgique, Lille, Paris, le midi de la France, au gr� des d�placements de son p�re. Elle ne va jamais � l'�cole, mais re�oit l'enseignement de professeurs particuliers. Au d�but de la Grande Guerre, bloqu�s en Belgique, Marguerite et son p�re embarquent pour l'Angleterre o� ils restent un an. L'adolescente manifeste une passion pour l'�tude des langues - anglais, latin, grec, italien - que son p�re encourage. Tout comme il va encourager son d�sir de devenir �crivain, fabriquant avec elle son nom de plume, Yourcenar - anagramme presque parfaite de Crayencour -, et finan�ant la publication de ses premiers po�mes, Le Jardin des Chim�res, en 1921. Elle ne passe que la premi�re partie de son baccalaur�at latin-grec, puis, � partir de 1922, voyage beaucoup en Europe, seule ou avec son p�re. En 1929, celui-ci meurt, et elle publie son premier roman, Alexis ou le Trait� du Vain Combat, remarqu� par la critique. Dans les ann�es 1930, outre ses constants voyages, elle s�journe longtemps en Gr�ce, o� elle d�couvre l'oeuvre du po�te Constantin Cavafis, qu'elle traduira. Elle publie plusieurs livres, toujours salu�s par la critique. Notamment Denier du r�ve (1934), Feux (1936), Nouvelles orientales (1938), Le Coup de Gr�ce (1939). En 1937, elle traduit Les Vagues, de Virginia Woolf. Cette m�me ann�e, elle fait la connaissance, � Paris, d'une Am�ricaine de son �ge, Grace Frick, qui deviendra sa compagne et sa traductrice. Elle lui rend visite aux �tats-Unis en 1938, et, en 1939, quand commence la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle d�cide de la rejoindre. Marguerite Yourcenar passe les ann�es de guerre entre New York, Hartford (Connecticut) et l'�le des Monts- D�serts, dans le Maine. Elle n'a plus d'argent et doit prendre un poste de professeur. � la fin de la guerre, elle re�oit de Suisse une malle contenant le manuscrit, inachev�, de M�moires d'Hadrien. Ce roman � la premi�re personne, reconstitution du destin de l'empereur romain Hadrien, est publi� chez Plon en 1951, et Marguerite Yourcenar conna�t, � quarante-huit ans, son premier succ�s public. Enfin reconnue, elle revient passer de longs mois en France, mais d�cide que sa " base " demeurera Petite Plaisance, la maison achet�e en 1950 avec Grace Frick sur l'�le des Monts-D�serts. Dans les ann�es 1950 et 1960, Grace Frick et Marguerite Yourcenar voyagent beaucoup - cette derni�re donne des conf�rences dans de nombreux pays d'Europe. Aux �tats-Unis, elles sont tr�s engag�es dans les mouvements �cologistes et dans la lutte pour les droits civiques. En 1964, Marguerite Yourcenar publie Fleuve profond, sombre rivi�re, une traduction de negro spirituals. Et elle travaille � un grand roman, L'oeuvre au Noir, qui obtient le prix Femina � l'unanimit�, en 1968. Consacr�e comme un �crivain important du XXe si�cle, avec une oeuvre singuli�re, elle est de plus en plus m�diatis�e, interview�e, tandis qu'elle publie les premiers volumes de sa trilogie familiale, Le Labyrinthe du monde : Souvenirs pieux (1974) et
