TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. 8.25 x 6.5 inches. [Vol.I], cxxvi + 412p.; [Vol.II], 413-1056 pp. Main text in double columns. Bound in half green calf over green sharkskin buckram boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting red morocco title labels, gilt. All edges gilt. Spines and adjoining board edges sunned and small stain on front board of Vol.I. A little foxing of edges and preliminaries and occasionally on margins; otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by numerous wood engraved text figures. Decorated by head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. The Leopold Shakespeare, which was first published in Britain in a single volume (hence the continuous pagination) in 1877, was dedicated to Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1853-84), the youngest son of Queen Victoria, who died of haemophilia. Based on the text of the German Shakespeare scholar, Nikolaus Delius of Bremen (1813-88), professor at the University of Bonn, it prints the works in chronological order and adds the plays of The Two Noble Kinsmen and Edward III. The edition was edited, with a long introduction, by Frederick James Furnivall (1825-1910), philologist, a co-editor of the New English Dictionary and founder of various literary societies, notably the Early English Text Society (1864). As a keen sculler on the river Thames, he may have inspired characters in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.
