Publisher's green cloth with spine decorated with gilt, spindly daisies, running up through the title lettering, also gilt. Gilt double fillets around outside of upper board. Slight rubbing to head, tail and edges of the spine and corner tips, pages edges somewhat dust-stained. Splitting to top couple of inches of the front gutter. Browning to recto of first free endpaper, repeated to verso of the back endpaper. With the author's note from 1891-92 edition reprinted on verso of the dedication page, which features the Whitman signature in facsimile beneath the epigraph "Come, said my soul". A very nice copy, published five years after the author's death. Walt Whitman, along with Emily Dickinson, is considered one of the architects of a uniquely American poetic voice.
