Add to basketAn early Claudia Farkas survey of Kuwait. Original colour illustrated glossy wraps 21x28cm. Printed by Fahad Al Marzouk, Kuwait. 158pp with Keith Wells' introductory text in English, and Farkas' colour photos captioned in English and Arabic. Near fine. This appears to be rare with Worldcat locating only 8 institutional copies (OCLC 22360167), and not recorded on Library Hub.
Farkas became Kuwait's first female photojournalist when she joined the Arab Times in 1979 at the age of 22. Initially working with Palestinian journalist Sabah Hassounah, she aimed to capture Kuwait's transformation on film. She went on to publish significant work on the Gulf War, further surveys of country, and her biography of Violet Dickson. Keith Wells was a journalist on the Arab Times and author of the "Wizr" trilogy published in his newspaper then book form (1979-84) with encouragement from Kuwait Bookshops owner Bashir Al-Khatib and Tony Janshanmal. After his illustrator Peter McMahon was murdered, he took up a "very low profile" English teaching job at Kuwait University before leaving the country in 1987. He also wrote a guide for ex-pats, and co-wrote a work on Kuwaiti wildlife. His wife Suzi contributed to the Kuwaiti Digest, wrote The Arabian Gulf Cookbook, co-wrote a book on Kuwaiti traditions, and prepared TEFL training materials.
Here Wells opens by noting that "Kuwait is a country which yields up its secrets slowly". He describes its seafaring heritage, Bedouin, tribes, the state, animals, daily life, Sheikhs, and Kuwait City, reflecting on the major changes underway during people's lifetimes. Farkas' photos, predominantly full or double-page, are arranged into themes of Tradition, Kuwait City, Trade, and People.
