Item description from seller

A copper engraved map on laid paper, uncoloured, from Volume 12 of Schwabe's Allgemeine Historie der Reisen (1748 - 1774). Image size is 37cm x 20cm. Text in German and French. Verso blank. Compass rose in center, sailing ships in bay. In upper right corner: "No. 9.". In lower right: "T.12.K". Original folds, very good condition. The French version of this map by Bellin appeared in Volume 11 of Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages, 1753, and also included a view of the Bay of Cumberland. A map of the NE coast of Juan Fernandes Island in the South Pacific, famously the home to the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk for more than four years from 1704, which may have inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.
