Kravchenko became disaffected with Stalinist Russia after he witnessed the large-scale starvation of the Ukrainian peasantry. However, his defection, and the publication of his memoir, I Chose Freedom, made him a target of Soviet Russia. An attack from the French Communist newspaper Les Lettres Francaises led to a court case which was dubbed`The Trial of the Century’.
