The Koran is universally accepted by Muslims to be the infallible Word of God as first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel nearly fourteen hundred years ago. Its 114 chapters, or surahs, recount the narratives central to Muslim belief, and together they form one of the world's most influential prophetic works and a literary masterpiece in its own right. But above all, the Koran provides the rules of conduct that remain fundamental to the Muslim faith today: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca and absolute faith in God.
About the Author: Born in Baghdad, N J Dawood came to England as an Iraq State Scholar and graduated from London University. His translation of the Tales from the Thousand and One Nights was first published as Penguin No.1001 in 1954 and has since been printed in eighteen various editions. He is best known for his translation of the Koran, the first in contemporary English idiom, which was published as a Penguin Classic in 1956.

Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. The Koran (2006) translated by N. J. Dawood Penguin Books | ISBN: 9780140449204 Condition: Near Fine As sold by Crappy Old Books There are books you read , books you study , and books you approach with the slightly cautious respect you?d normally reserve for high voltage signs and very old buildings. The Koran sits firmly in that third category: a foundational text with immense cultural weight, a deep literary presence, and the quiet power of something that has been read, recited, debated, treasured, and interpreted for centuries. This Penguin Classics edition, translated by N. J. Dawood , is often chosen as a clear, accessible entry point for English readers ? the sort of translation that aims to be readable without pretending the original is ?simple.? It?s a book that can be approached in more than one way: as scripture, as literature, as history, as a window into the development of ideas, law, ethics and community, or simply as one of the central texts that shaped a vast stretch of human civilisation. And it isn?t shaped like a conventional ?beginning-middle-end? narrative. The Qur?an?s structure can feel unfamiliar if you?re used to novels or linear histories. It?s closer to a sequence of revelations and addresses, moving between exhortation, story, reflection, guidance, and imagery ? shifting in tone, pace, and emphasis. It can be direct, lyrical, admonitory, consoling, urgent, and majestic, sometimes within a few lines. In short: it doesn?t behave like modern books, because it isn?t trying to. If you like reading slowly ? dipping in, returning, rereading ? this is very much that sort of text. It rewards attention. It invites contemplation. It also has the occasional habit of making you put it down for a moment and think, ?Right. That?s? a lot.? Which is, frankly, part of the point. There?s also something delightfully Penguin about the whole thing: a portable, well-made edition of a world-defining text you can actually hold in one hand, like you?re casually popping out to the shops with a scripture that has shaped empires and philosophies in your tote bag. Only Penguin would make the monumental feel so? shelf-friendly. This particular copy is Near Fine , meaning it?s in notably tidy shape ? crisp, well-kept, and ready for careful reading. Whether you?re approaching it for faith, scholarship, general curiosity, or the simple desire to understand the world a bit better through its most influential texts, it?s a solid, handsome edition to own. From Crappy Old Books : because sometimes the most interesting ?classic? isn?t a novel, or a play, or a poem ? it?s the book that millions have lived with, returned to, and carried through history. And this one, in a clean Penguin jacket, is ready for its next reader. Seller Inventory # 5676
