Knight of the Order of St. James in Spain - Historical Costume Engraving This exquisite hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of St. James (Orden des heiligen Jacobs), a distinguished Spanish chivalric order known for its historic role in protecting pilgrims on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). The figure is dressed in formal attire, featuring the emblematic red cross of St. James on the flowing white cloak. A feathered hat and ceremonial sword complete the dignified representation. The engraving captures both the grandeur and ceremonial significance of the knightly order, making it a compelling piece for collectors of historical prints or enthusiasts of Spanish heritage. The artwork comes from the series "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," originally published between 1779 and 1791. This ambitious project sought to document the attire of various European chivalric and religious orders in meticulous detail. The delicate coloring and fine lines of this piece testify to the masterful craftsmanship of the period. Collectors and historians alike will appreciate the depth of historical detail in this engraving, which not only showcases the knightly attire but also reflects the broader cultural and ceremonial traditions of 18th-century Spain. Condition Report: This engraving is in very good condition for its age, with only light foxing and age-toning along the margins. The hand-coloring remains vivid, and the paper is stable with no tears or folds. Framing Tip: Consider a matting in neutral tones, such as cream or light grey, paired with a dark wooden or gold frame. This combination will enhance the richness of the hand-coloring while emphasizing the historical significance of the piece.…
