505 pp. + 49 steel-engraved plates (all called for) of portraits of many of the contributors to this volume + one additional portrait, all with tissue guards present; thick 4to; later slipcase. Title page in two states (engraved and printed). Original dark blue morocco, elaborate floral design gilt-stamped on the covers and spine compartments with cottage and ornamental decorations in the centers; four raised bands; beveled edges to the boards; all edges gilt. A festschrift of short stories and poetry in honor of the editor of the Knickerbocker magazine, Louis Gaylord Clark. It was planned for the proceeds from this volume would go towards building a cottage on the Hudson River for Mr. Clark. Writers who contributed to this volume include: Washington Irving, OLiver Wendell Holmes, William Cullent Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Rufus Griswold, and many others. Katharine Floyd's copy (dated 1855), with her signature on a front blank. Hinges and bands a little rubbed; some foxing to the portraits; short crack to lower front hinge; overall a very good, well-preserved copy. Seller Inventory # 1755
