This volume of my autobiography covers the years from 1971 to the present. It is a successor to previous volumes which take the story up to my arrival in Cambridge. It is a curious book and I have not heard of any other like it. So, it is worth explaining very briefly why I wrote it. At one level, it can be seen as a guide to the archive of materials which I am currently planning to deposit in a University Library. This is a very large be useful for future historians, it needs a simple map of the life of the academic who generated it. Those working in the archive, or finding traces of my wanderings in the electronic world of useful to have a unifying overview, knitting together the strands.
Secondly, I have for some time felt that it would be interesting to have an account of how those who are professionally engaged in teaching, administration and research at university level actually live and work. Although there are a quite a lot of amusing and interesting accounts by academics about their lives and works, autobiographies of various kinds, as far as I know, no-one has given a detailed account of what an academic actually does. There is often a certain amount about friendships, travels, maybe some of the research and writing. Yet central matters like teaching and administration are usually omitted as intrinsically perhaps too obvious or boring. I have decided to try
Thirdly, it is a way of thanking some of the numerous people who, through my life from birth to the present, have helped and encouraged me in various ways. We are not islands, and especially not in academic work, yet the others who contribute much of what appears under our name are often not described or named. I will try to do this. For this reason, I am dedicating the book to all those who educated me and those with whom I have shared my adventures.
Finally, if we believe that experience teaches us something that can be usefully transmitted to those who follow in our footsteps, that a Master can pass on some wisdom to future apprentices, then I should attempt to set that down. I do believe that I have learnt something useful in my somewhat unusual academic life and that if someone had given me a book such as this, it might have saved me from a few blunders and made my life a little more productive.
I have tried to pursue problems and not periods or places, and I have gradually learnt a number of craft methods for solving problems in my personal and professional life. So, this book is also a small tribute to Marc Bloch and his Historian’s Craft, thoughts written in his case in a prisoner of war camp before he was executed by the Nazis, in my case during the Covid19 crisis and lockdowns. It is a historical anthropologist’s craft which may possibly give inspiration or guidance to others.
