Bring Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedy to life in your classroom. This comprehensive King Lear Curriculum Unit from The Center for Learning provides educators with structured, engaging, and standards-based lesson plans that guide students through one of Shakespeare’s most complex and rewarding plays.
- Step-by-step lesson plans covering plot, character development, imagery, themes, language, and dramatic structure
- Student handouts and worksheets designed to build comprehension and analytical skills
- Assessments included — quizzes, objective tests, writing prompts, and culminating activities
- Focus on literary analysis including tragedy structure, imagery patterns, rhetorical devices, and thematic development
- Supports advanced learners with AP-style discussion topics and essay preparation
Designed for secondary English classrooms, this unit approaches King Lear through carefully sequenced lessons that balance close reading with student-centered discussion. From the division of the kingdom to the devastating final scene, students explore major elements of Shakespearean tragedy, including the tragic hero, dramatic irony, parallel plots, imagery, and the Elizabethan worldview. The unit emphasizes active learning through role-playing, group work, guided questions, and creative projects.
In addition to in-depth literary analysis, this resource helps students navigate Shakespeare’s complex language, understand shifts between prose and blank verse, and recognize rhetorical devices and figurative language. With supplementary materials such as writing topics, objective tests, AP connections, and enrichment activities, this curriculum unit equips teachers with everything needed to make King Lear accessible, meaningful, and intellectually challenging for today’s students.
