The Killing Ground: The British Army, the Western Front and the Emergence of Modern War, 1900-1918 by Tim Travers, published in paperback by Pen & Sword Military Classics (Series No. 11) in 2003. This is Professor Travers's study of how the British Army, and particularly its senior officers, adapted to the technological warfare of the Western Front, drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs and official files, with particular focus on Douglas Haig and the Somme and Passchendaele offensives. The cover shows a montage of period photographs above a trench scene, with a former library price sticker and a Telford & Wrekin Libraries label and cataloguing details on the copyright page. The covers show noticeable wear, with creasing, rubbing and a taped repair visible on the spine and rear panel. The spine carries an old library shelf-mark label. Page edges show some browning, and the text pages photographed show a couple of light watermark-type stains near the edges. The internal photographic plates and text remain clear and legible.…
