Superpowers don't fix your fears. They force you to face them.

Josh Jacobs, Jr. is not trying to be a hero.

After something went wrong at his last school, Josh has one goal for sixth grade: disappear. New town. New middle school. Fresh start. Keep his head down, stay invisible, and let no one get close enough to hurt him again.

That plan falls apart the second he steps in to stop a bully. Something awakens inside him. A force that feels ancient, electric, and completely out of control. Josh isn't just the new kid anymore. He's Kid Comet.

But when a terrifying shadow monster starts attacking Rockvale, Josh discovers this is no ordinary villain. The creature feeds on fear. It knows his doubts, his secrets, his past. It does not want to defeat him. It wants him to give up.

And heroes do not get to quit.

Perfect for readers ages 8 to 12 who love anime-inspired hero journeys, superhero origin stories, underdogs discovering hidden powers, and graphic novel or manga fans ready to level up to chapter books. Fast-paced action balanced with real middle school struggles, and themes of courage, resilience, and identity.

If your reader flies through manga, lives for superhero animation, or devours graphic novels but struggles to connect with traditional chapter books, Kid Comet and the Sixth Grade Shadow is the book that bridges that gap.

This anime-inspired middle grade adventure delivers cinematic battles, a villain who fights psychologically, superpowers that refuse to behave, and the very real chaos of starting over at a new school.
