This practical manual explains how the Solar Compass helps surveyors measure latitude, true bearings, and celestial data, while also serving as a magnetic compass. It compiles hands-on instructions, adjustments, and field-ready techniques drawn from real surveying work, designed for use in the field rather than theory.
The book covers how to make and use the instrument, plus how to account for refraction, parallax, and magnetic influences. It includes tables, practical rules, and step‑by‑step methods to run lines, measure distances, and restore lost corners. This edition presents a compact, durable companion suited to the busy surveyor’s day.
- Clear explanations of the Solar Compass and its practical applications in latitude, meridian finding, and celestial measurements
- Guidance on adjustments, construction, and field setup for reliable results
- Practical tables and rules for measuring, corrections, and traverses
- Tips for outfitting a survey team and running an efficient field operation
Ideal for readers who work on public land surveys, field crews, and students seeking a hands-on reference to classic surveying tools.
