Print on Demand. The 18th century saw the birth of German literature with authors such as Lessing, Schiller and Goethe at its helm. But one of the first authors of note, particularly for his work in grammar and language, was Johann Christoph Adelung. This book presents a comprehensive translation of his seminal work on the subject, with pedagogical notes added for greater clarity. Adelung's work has been of great influence on the history of German as a spoken and written language. His focus was on the codification and standardization of grammar and usage, presenting the German language in its most correct, precise, and uniform method of usage. This volume provides an in-depth look at the rules and principles that govern word formation, the use of articles, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions, and the agreement of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Through this translation, a wider audience is now able to access the foundational theories that shaped the German language into the form we know today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Che difiiculties, which even the more intelligent students of the German Language invariably met with, in the translation of the highly useful 13e cises of dr. Noehden, suggested to me first the probable utility of a book like the present. It cannot, indeed, be considered otherwise, thana desideratum, particularly to all those, who, from their' local situation, may be [deprived Of the ad vantage of a master. This would not have been so much the case, if Circumstances had allowed dr.' 'noehden to annex a German and English Vocabulary to the Exercises, in the way he inten ded, according to the first project of that work. Not to dwell any farther on the expediency of publishing a Key of this description, I will only add, that it has been undertaken with the full approbation of the original author ofathe Exercises.
