About this Item
Description of the mysteries of the Roman Catholic Church. Gives prayers and Bible readings for each ritual and season of the year. Table of contents gives 383 pages of prayers and responses for particular masses. Latin and English translations are given side-by-side when appropriate. This is followed with 128 pages of the Epistles and Gospel for each Sunday and Holiday of the year. Specific authors and illustrators are not identified. This copy has the dates for movable Holidays beginning in 1900. Other sellers have dated their copies from 1900 on this account. I would suggest the publishing date should be a few years prior to 1900. Nihil Obstat: The Holy Father Leo XIII (born 1810 & died 1903, reigned as Pope from 20 February 1878 to his death) appointed the editor of this prayerbook. Imprimatur: Franciscus Silas, Episcopus Indianapolitanus After a book is written, for it to be published by a Catholic Church press, there is a 2 step process. 1st it must be determined not to undermine Church beliefs (Nihil Obstat assures this). Then an highly ranked Church officer (Imprimatur) approves and orders it to be printed. Silas Francis Marean Chatard (1834¿1918) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Indianapolis in the United States. On March 26, 1878 he was named Bishop of the Diocese of Vincennes, in Indiana. At his consecration in Rome on June 14, 1878, he switched his first and middle name, taking the name of Francis Silas. He was installed in the cathedral at Vincennes on August 11, 1878 and he went almost immediately to Indianapolis, arriving there on August 17, 1878. Following the move, he was named as the first bishop of the newly renamed Diocese of Indianapolis. In January 1899, he suffered a stroke, from which he never fully recovered Miniature hardcover has celluloid covers with clasp opposite spine & gilt page-edges. Front cover has a raised cross embedded in flowers. Inscribed as confirmation gift inside front cover dated 1905. Celluloid spine cover, bookmark ribbon and clasp mechanism have been lost. Binding tight and text unmarked. Ink dots on page-edge for text markers and pages have stains from handling. This book was kept and used for a lifetime. No copyrights nor printing/edition dates explicitly stated. From the information above, 1895 publishing date was estimated. Stated printed in Austria. Imprimatur page states "Edit. 3." Table of Contents has footers "1*" & "A", which I assume refer to print-runs. Of course, no ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007155
