Uniform Edition. Scarce. Bound in the original pale green cloth with spine stamped in red lettering & border designs, spine sunned. Without the scarce just jacket. Interior is clean and bright, small inscription from previous owner on ffep. 303pp. Small octavo. Orwell considered Aspidistra one of the two or three of his books of which he was ashamed: “it was written simply as an exercise and I oughtn’t to have published it, but I was desperate for money. At that time I simply hadn’t a book in me, but I was half starved and had to turn out something to bring in £100 or so.” He did not wish for it to be reprinted in his lifetime; the present Uniform Edition was published nearly two decades after the first edition, and four years after Orwell’s death. Orwell’s biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes, “the novel is flawed by weaknesses in plot, style and characterization” but earns praises for the “poignant and moving quality that comes from Orwell’s perceptive portrayal of the alienation and loneliness of poverty.”.…
