“Katya and the Crocodile” by Nina Gernet and Grigory Yagdfeld is a light, humorous children’s story about responsibility, chaos and the unintended consequences of good intentions. The plot follows schoolchildren who are asked to take care of animals from their school’s small zoological corner during the holidays, including rabbits, a turtle, a bird and even a crocodile. When the animals are temporarily distributed among the children’s homes, a chain of comic disasters begins. Katya Pastushkova, a lively and impulsive girl, ends up responsible for part of the menagerie, but her lack of organisation quickly leads to confusion as animals escape, reappear in unexpected places, alarm neighbours and turn everyday life into a constant chase. The story unfolds through fast-paced humorous episodes in which children and adults struggle to restore order, and beneath the comedy it carries a clear moral about responsibility, attentiveness and understanding the consequences of careless actions. Despite the chaos, everything is eventually resolved and the characters learn important lessons. Nina Gernet (1904–1982) was a Soviet writer, playwright and screenwriter known for her work in children’s and youth literature, as well as in theatre and film, with a style marked by wit, lightness and lively dialogue, while Grigory Yagdfeld (1908–1964) was a writer and screenwriter who frequently collaborated with her, and together they created several popular children’s works with a cinematic structure and dynamic storytelling. The story originally appeared as a screenplay for the 1957 Soviet film “Girl and the Crocodile” before being adapted into literary form. The illustrations in the “Detskaya Literatura” third edition were created by Boris Kalaushin (1929–1999), a Soviet book illustrator known for his expressive, theatrical and slightly grotesque style, characterised by strong movement, caricature-like characters and visual humour that closely supports the rhythm of the narrative, effectively acting as a visual director of the story. …
