About this Item
Portius, K[arl] J[ulius] S[imon]: Katechismus der Schachspielkunst. Leipzig, 1860. J. J. Weber. XX. 216 p. with diagrams. Third improved and enlarged edition. Contemporary half cloth binding. Worn, with minor damage. Front endpaper missing. - Portius, C(arl) J. Simon P., chess writer, was born on May 3, 1797 at Weißbach near Zschopau in the Kingdom of Saxony. He has spent most of his life in Leipzig as an elementary school teacher, besides writing a lot. However, one may confidently claim that his name has gained a world-wide reputation in the chess world. Not only did he write in Leipzig the so-called. Not only did he establish in Leipzig the so-called chess column of the "Illustrirte Zeitung" (founded in 1843), which was the first of its kind, served other papers as a model and pattern and, imitated in the same style, remained as a permanent enrichment of generous journalism, already in No. 7 of Aug. 12, 1843, and remained a faithful editor until his death in Leipzig on May 4, 1862. But P. is also the author of that famous "Catechism of the Art of Chess", which, first published in 1854 with 176 pages and woodcuts within the versatile series "Weber's Illustrated Catechisms", has grown up to the 11th edition (1895) with diagrams to a volume of 239, in 1901 in the 12th, "increased and improved edition published by Dr. Herm. v. Gottschall" to one of 288 pages. This Portius' catechism has found an appeal like no other chess textbook and has educated whole generations of chess players. Seller Inventory # 47
