The reader will find Kant's theory of space and time very clearly re-stated and criticised in modern terms. There is an import-ant discussion of the Antinomies, dis-playing their traditional background and their connections with recent mathe-matical logic. The familiar thesis that Kant stated the presuppositions of New-tonian science is treated in consider-able detail. The author draws all these problems together in an illuminating account of the ancient, medieval, Leibnizian, and finally Kantian theories of how the mind unifies its knowledge. The ontological discussion in Part II is centred on the duality of phenomena and noumena. The author carefully establishes the status, in respect of this duality, of space and time, appearances, God, the acting and thinking subj.
