FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. 299 + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth with brown titles. Deckled edges. A little wear to extremities and spine darkened; otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate with ownership signature. Signed by author on half title. Illustrated by 31 pages of black and white photographic plates, including frontispiece and by 16 maps, plan and sketches in text. Signed first edition of the author's sixth book which describes visits to ten Atlantic and North Sea islands: Skokholm, Grassholm, Ramsey, Bardsey, The Blaskets, Heliogoland, Fair Isle, North Ronaldshay, The Faeroes and the Westmann Islands. Ronald Lockley (1903-2000), the Welsh ornithologist, naturalist and farmer leased the island of Skokholm in 1927 and carried out pioneering studies of breeding migratory birds, notably the Manx Shearwater.
