'To the Emperor Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Pius Augustus Caesar, and to his philosopher son Verissimus, and to Lucius the philosopher. and to the Sacred Senate and to all the Roman people -- on behalf of people of every nation who are unjustly hated and grossly abused.' Thus Justin begins his defense of the race of Christians, describing for Antoninus Pius the outline of Christian doctrine, the relationship of Greek philosophy to that doctrine, concluding with a spare account of the conduct of early Christian worship, the ''eucharistizing'' of bread and wine: ''.this food is called among us eucharist, of which no one is allowed to partake except one who believes that the things which we teach are true.' 245 pp.
