A haunting literary reimagining of Judas Iscariot, rendered in a lyrical and dramatic prose that gives voice to one of the most enigmatic figures in biblical history.

First published in Lisbon in 1901, Judas: A Lyrical Romance in Four Journeys is Augusto de Lacerda’s bold meditation on betrayal, conscience, desire, faith, and destiny. Rather than presenting Judas merely as a symbol of treachery, Lacerda explores him as a tormented human being caught between spiritual longing, political expectation, personal passion, and the terrible weight of history.

Structured in four “journeys,” the novel unfolds with the cadence of a sacred drama. Its language is poetic, intense, and theatrical, moving through the atmosphere of ancient Jerusalem while examining the moral abyss that separates devotion from disillusionment. Readers interested in biblical fiction, literary classics, theological imagination, and psychological portraits of misunderstood figures will find in this work a rare and powerful rediscovery from Portuguese literature.

This English edition brings a classic to new readers, preserving the solemn beauty and emotional force of Lacerda’s original vision.
