First edition. Royal octavo (26 x 18.5cm). 'In February 1838 he disembarked at Smyrna and began to explore the interior of the surrounding country. In Lycia, an area relatively unknown to European travellers, he discovered the ruins of cities which had existed prior to 300 B.C. The appearance of this journal excited such interest that the British Museum undertook three subsequent expeditions under Fellows' direction.'- Blackmer. pp. x,[2],346. With a frontispiece, folding coloured map & 20 lithographed plates. Some occasional foxing/browning to plates. more so to the frontis. Otherwise a clean & pleasant copy in the publisher's green cloth decorated in blind & gilt, a little worn head & tail of spine & a 3cm split to the top upper joint, otherwise Vg.
