Take an imaginary walk into the life of the most famous Joseph in history: Joseph, the husband of Mary. Joseph: step-father of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Joseph: One of the most well-known characters in the Bible, he never uttered a word in the text. Until now.
This speculative journey gives the reader a look into the relationships of the most famous blended family of all time.
Author R. E. Tolbert creates a vivid and moving look at the power that comes from choosing Love above all else.
From the Introduction
The Bible tells us what we need to know about living life to the full, now and forever. Even so, my experience across twenty-five years of ordained ministry with a wide variety of people confirms there is much unsaid in scripture that leaves us wanting more. Our curiosity craves details!
What were the logistics on Noah’s ark for meals, ventilation, and sanitation? Did the disciples joke around with Jesus? What did Jesus write in the sand when the crowd was ready to stone a woman to death? What was Jesus like as a boy growing up? Did he do miracles to impress his friends?
Regarding Jesus’ childhood, we do not know much. The Gospel writers have other important things to tell us. We wish for more.
For instance, it is fascinating that Joseph never speaks in the Bible. Surely the earthly father of Christ had something worthwhile to say!

From the text
You need to get out of the house,” said Mary, Joseph’s wife. “I have spring cleaning to do and you’re under foot. Don’t you have a project to work on? You know you’ve been a little unsteady lately. Maybe you could make a walking stick.”
“I don’t need a walking stick,” said Joseph. “A man can’t be worried about a walking stick when he has tools to carry.”
“Anyway, I need you to get out so I can do some work.”
Joseph, in a huff, gathered up his tool bag, tucked his hatchet in his belt, slung the water pouch over his shoulder. He took his things and stepped out the door.
He paused a moment to pick a direction at random. He started walking through the village, mumbling as he went. “’Go find something to do,’ she says,” he grumbled. “You’ve been kind of shaky. Maybe you should make yourself a walking stick,’ she says.” He continued talking to himself. “A man can’t worry about walking sticks when he has tools to carry.”
Joseph grumbled and walked until he reached the tombs. Nobody on that side of the village had stopped him to do any work. He looked around at the tombs. “Well, I don’t guess anybody here needs any work done.” He turned around and began walking back through the village. Maybe somebody on the other side would need something done.
